The drive to get here by itself is a treat. You can feel the air get cooler and the landscape become more thick with trees. Then you arrive to a scene that to the average mind will appear just as it must have a hundred and some years ago when there was surely at least one gunfight outside of the saloon. The place just reeks of history and as you sit inside, looking above at the box seats, you might feel like this was as much a brothel as an opera house. And then you might lament that brothels no longer exist. And then you might make that comment to someone who reacts rather uncomfortably. So then you head back to the bar area which has a few good craft beers, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Mendocino Brewing are the ones I recall and you are tempted to shoot some moonshine if only they had it. You sit down for a private dinner while a band plays classic songs and receive a healthy looking slab of prime rib with some inviting mashed potatoes on the side. You're sure plenty of cowboys and miners and other rough-edged characters had this same meal in their day. It all comes off as a big history lesson. Or like reading a book about the Old West. But this is the 3-D movie and it's dope. Food's perfect, drinks are plentiful. Don't ask me about price, cuz this cowboy didn't pay. Overall, an awesome site.

After a nice hike at the Gila Cliff Dwellings, treat yourself to a meal at the historic Buckhorn. Step back into time and sidle up to the massive bar and take in all the old memorabilia from the early 1800s. Great tasting steaks, salads, and an assortment of other choices seal the deal!

After a afternoon at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, we stopped at the Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House for dinner. We had reservations. The atmosphere is outstanding if you like historic buildings (1865). There was a fire in the fireplace. Three of us had delicious ribeye steaks with different sides, such as baked potatoes, French fries, or mashed potatoes, and saluted spinach. My wife had Asian glazed salmon with similar sides. Also, very good. I forgot to mention that the meals came with soup or salads. I had the Italian soup which was delicious. We ended our outstanding dining experience by sharing a piece of scrumptious peanut butter chocolate cake. Service was very good. Would definitely return!

The Buckhorn's reputation is a good one. The current management has cheapened the food and they charge a lot more than they should. The service is average with the usual high turnover in wait staff. The building was extensively remodeled a few years ago and it looks good and is more sound. The dishes we used to get there are not as good as they were before. Some people travel long distances to eat there because they have heard about it and find that it is just average. The beef has a lot more fat and gristle these days. Gone downhill. Drinkers seem to like the bar and music.

We live in the area and are regulars at the Buckhorn and have continuously brought our friends to enjoy this establishment. Tonight 4/20/15 we decided to treat ourselves to a steak dinner. The rib eye steak was horrible it was half fat and tough even though I had ordered it medium rare. The chef or owner wouldn't even come out to talk to us. He said he served 39 steaks and that my steak couldn't be bad. I wasn't even looking for a refund just wanted him to know that his $32.95 steak dinner was going to be served to our dog. I would not recommend the Buckhorn to anyone looking for a great steak dinner. Gwen Balcom

Really good food in a unique historic building in the middle of nowhere! The service is very professional. Reservations are essential. Save room for dessert. The flourless Grand Marnier Chocolate Torte is big enough to share with the table.

Buckhorn, you are so comfortable on a cold winter night. Your fireplace blazing, your beef is oh-so-good. The perfect cross between an old-style saloon, dive bar, and upscale restaurant. You have the best service and food in the Silver City area. I left stuffed and warm and completely satisfied. As a history fiend, I love this old building and the paintings on the wall. I am so glad you exist.

The Buckhorn is a wonderful restaurant. The ambiance and appearance is quite special. True New Mexico flavor. The owner is culinary trained in San Francisco CA. The menu has something for every palate. The evening my son and I dined we found our way into the bar and enjoyed some great local music. Don't miss out on The Buckhorn. As an aside our visit was extra special because we stayed at the Bear Creek Cabins.

Arrived at 6:15pm for dinner staff very attentive. Order a bottle of Chardonnay Bin 205 which they did not have so we had the Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc which was exceptional, my husband ordered the salmon and I ordered the grilled jumbo prawns and to my disappointment were not jumbo prawns and were flavorless to say the less. My husband did enjoy his salmon which was excellent. If this was my first experience I would not return.

This is a truly unique and cool place. From the outside, it looks totally untouched from the 1800s. The sign, the surroundings and the overall vibe. It is actually over 100 years old too for real. If a horse and carriage stopped and dropped customers off, you wouldn't be surprised. It just looks like a movie set from a period piece. Once inside, it's cozy, inviting and the food is very good. The menu is pretty big. Attentive servers, good bar drinks, open mic and all around good vibe and fun.

With all its divinity, this place absolutely rocks. I'm from Southern California and before the place was renovated it was OK, but now, it really is a destination place. I can't remember ever having gone to this place and it being so packed. My sister and her boyfriend accompanied me to this establishment. My sister had the cheese steak sandwich that was served open faced with a NM green chile cheese sauce. Her boyfriend had the Prime Rib dinner that was simple but yet cooked to perfection of rare to medium rare. I had the NM green chile stew which was sublime. It was served with a dollop of creme fraiche and a house made flour tortilla. I also had the hamburger that was served with a strip of green chile (NM, do I keep repeating myself). Absolutely perfect. The executive Chef and Proprietor, Tomas Bock has done a wonderful job in bringing back to life and old icon in the Silver City area.

Went to the buckhorn last night for dinner and music. I had the pulled pork sandwich which was awesome, bun fresh not to saucy and the coleslaw on top was fresh and tasty.my husband had the buffalo burger which was cooked to perfection with the 1/2 fries 1/2 onion rings. Service is always great. The band was no bueno on Friday the 10th, however when we returned Saturday the 11th the music was great.

Went in January 2013 with a group. Wore a buffalo hat that fitted right in. A great evening and will go back next time we're in Silver City, which will be soon.

We've been to the Buckhorn yesterday and enjoyed our visit very much. My girlfriend and I both had a burger each - both very delicious. Also very worth trying: The onion rings. Service was excellent, prices are reasonable. Very nice interior. In summary: A very recommendable place.

Great place! I love the Southwest vibe going on here. It takes you back in time. I love the renovation! It's a shame the prices went up, though.Great steaks, great atmosphere, beautiful location in Pinos Altos. I will continue to come back here any time I am in Silver City. Great memories made at a great restaurant.

The food was very good -- the atmosphere is perfect. We each had steaks and they were perfectly done. However, the service has been abysmal the last two times we ate there. It was so abysmal that I hesitate to go back ... definitely not with guests.

Dare I say that a bordello was baby friendly? Cause this former house of ill repute totally was awesome and a fun night out during our weekend trip to Silver City. We called to make reservations and I let them know we were two and a baby, they saved us a table in a little niche that had curtains (that in former days must have hid more than a gleeful baby playing with a spoon). The food was very hearty and my husband even got to have quail which was exciting for him! I had the pork soup and chicken and both were well seasoned and left me stuffed. There was live music near the bar, but we were so far away that it wasn't overbearing or uncomfortable for our little guy. I think anyone who is going to Silver City or the Gila Cliff Dwellings probably will stop here anyways, but I just wanted to let everyone know that this place really added a special touch to our trip! The pictures on the walls are pretty interesting, too.
